The Eternal Paradox of the Status Quo
A six-part series of surreal video loops, comprising three blood fractals and three chrome fractals.
Each blood fractal represents an endless cycle of life, pitched ironically as we consider, as individuals, our mortal confines in time. Grain and overlays corrupt and dirty the imagery to remind us that external factors affect us individually - they remove control - as we meander through life. Without escape from the loop and a persistent bombardment of subconscious influence, the three blood fractals are designed to make us feel trapped within existence, left searching for answers and a way to overcome endless struggles.
Each chrome fractal represents the quest for fulfilment, be it wealth, love or peace within oneself. Shiny textures move like liquid forcing us to question whether an interaction is possible - would obtaining them cause their beauty to denature and fade? Oscillations and vibrations symbolise the universe interacting with them, reminding us that external influences play a part that is out of our control. Jagged edges serve to suggest all that glitters may not be gold (or chrome) and that, in fact, we may be asking the wrong questions or seeking answers in the wrong places.
The series is designed to depict a duality between life and fulfilment. On one hand we, as self-aware humans, are confronted by existential issues of being alive - Why am I here? At the same time we are creatures of desire and on a continual journey to source fulfilment - Where am I going? Perhaps a better approach would be to ask ‘where am I in the big picture?’ and ‘why am I seeking this fulfilment?’.
My designs are based on Julia fractals - perpetual patterns derived from the ‘complex dynamics’ branch of mathematics. Infinite by nature, they share a duality with the format by existing endlessly. I manipulate fractal imagery to simulate structures that morph and spin. I denature each fractal to disturb any sense of harmony and add ethereal soundscapes that pulse and drone. Each composition can be looped endlessly allowing the viewer to lose themselves in a dream state that evokes unique inner emotions - subjective to everyone.
