Deformation of the Endless Mind

Artist Statement

Infinity entangles reality and the imaginary. With no boundaries, it has no start, middle or end. As humans, this is deeply perplexing as we are confined to the existence and direction of time - a tangible and elemental fundamental. Outside of our universe, and unbound by the laws and properties of our physics, there exists an unknown. Is it eternal?

Deformation of the Endless Mind is a video series of nightmarish dream states that can be indefinitely looped.

Each cosmic plane transcends three states of existence - the galactic (macro), the sub-atomic (micro), and the (subconscious) self. Viewers are encouraged to embrace disorientation, allow themselves to become overwhelmed and sense the futility of attempting to comprehend. I want to provoke the viewer to question what they are experiencing.

Is it:

  • Something vast - a view from outside of our universe?

  • Something minute - sub-atomic particles fluctuating in and out of existence?

  • Something subconscious - synaptic electrons firing to create a sense of emotional, conscious thought?

  • Or all three combined - a tapering state, consuming itself in perpetuity?

All of these, one may associate with questioning our place in existence.

Each core film has a duration of between 13 and 30 seconds but can loop to last any amount of time. They are accompanied by ethereal hellish and intergalactic soundscapes that aim to fragment sensibility. The series aims to evoke an uneasy feeling that cannot be easily described.

My designs are based on Julia fractals - perpetual patterns derived from the ‘complex dynamics’ branch of mathematics. Infinite by nature, they share a duality with the format by existing endlessly. I manipulate fractal imagery to simulate vast monoliths that morph and spin before plunging into rapid dives that transport the viewer into scenes resembling organic matter. Symmetry has warped and the fractals denatured, disturbing any sense of balance and harmony. Blackholes form and disappear in instances, occasionally lingering or chasing. Streaks of light bend within the darkness - asking the viewer to question logic and lose faith in reality.

I am fascinated by fractals’ inherent attributes and visual beauty. I was compelled to create the series when I started to question the compounded crossover between physical and conscious existence. I liken them to dreams - in that mind and matter are seemingly gateways to infinite possibilities that can be further engorged within the abstraction of the multiverse.

I perceive these artworks as inescapable and inexplicable nightmares that are difficult to comprehend or put into words. Overwhelming in complexity and shadowed in tones of futility and dread, they form the very sensations humans try to push aside in waking life as we strive to find a sense of meaning and place. The combination of dream (the subconscious) and fractal (mathematical), in this way, is inseparable from human existence.

Merging conscious and physical realities is the foundation of Deformation of the Endless Mind. And when questioning reality, I firmly believe it is bound tightly to the concept of infinity.
